Organic soils

Authentic, unique wines encapsulating sense of place

The pristine nature of the estate, its outstanding setting and the determination to respect the environment and produce authentic, unique wines encapsulating sense of place have provided ideal conditions for going down the organic farming route. Domaine Les Bugadelles’ fine wines are certified organic, hence pesticides, weed killers and synthetic chemical fertilisers are banned – i.e. are never used here.

Only natural techniques and products permitted for organic farming (sulphur, Bordeaux mixture and mating disruption) are used on these unspoilt soils to grow our grapes. Low rainfall (500mm/year approximately) and the prevailing North-West wind – the Tramontane – naturally promotes healthy vineyards. Ecological compensation areas and wild plants surrounding the vineyards help maintain rich biodiversity and balance soil structure. In the absence of weed killers, each root produces different micro-organisms which allow vines to latch on to all the subtle components in the soil (mycorrhizas), that form the essence of terroir effect.

By realising the need to respect the land and its soils early on, Bugadelles’ grapes can grow on natural soils and healthy vines, thereby achieving higher levels of quality which in turn allow us to make more expressive and idiosyncratic wines displaying the typicity of this unique growing environment.
The use of organic farming has naturally been rolled out across the entire estate to include not only vineyards but also fruit trees and olive groves for instance.
